A light attack makes you slash and step forward at the same time. In Demons Souls for example, a heavy attack with a longsword causes your character to take a big lunge forward. It doesn't seem to be talked about often, but one of the reason's TES games have rubbish combat is that your character doesn't move (to any noticeable extent) with their attacks. Unless I'm in full heavy armor and they are attacking me with a toothpick.

It should not be possible for me to walk up to an enemy and just button mash, attacking them as they attack me. They could simply shake the camera in a way not unlike the recoil of a gun in a first person shooter, where the player still has some control. Note this is not the same as going through some ridiculous knock down period. And if I get attacked as the player, I should be staggered and lose a bit of control. Look at the souls games, and look at how every time you attack an enemy they stagger - unless they're heavily armored and you are using a light weapon. There are several key problems with the combat.įirstly is the lack of feedback.
